How to see the Milky Way from Terlingua

Illustration of the Milky Way over desert mesas

Big Bend National Park is an International Dark Sky Park, and the sky from our pods is every bit as dark as the park itself. A few habits make the difference between "nice stars" and "I cannot stop looking up."

Pick the right night

The Milky Way is easiest to see when the moon is new or thin. Check a moon phase calendar before you book, and aim for the week around the new moon. Summer is core season, but crisp winter nights have the clearest air.

Give your eyes 20 minutes

Your eyes need about twenty minutes to fully adapt to the dark. Turn off the porch light, skip the phone screen, and use a red flashlight if you need to see your feet.

Bring the right gear

  • A reclining chair or a blanket for the deck
  • A red-light headlamp
  • Binoculars, which show far more than you would expect
  • A free planetarium app on your phone, with night mode on

Dress for the desert

Even after a hot day, desert nights cool off fast. Bring a jacket and a hot drink.

When you book a pod you also get the stargazing deck, so there is no need to go anywhere. Check availability and pick a new-moon week.
