Three days in Big Bend National Park: a plan from your pod

Illustration of a desert trail at sunrise

You are about eleven minutes from the park, which means you can go early and be back for a siesta. Here is a simple three-day plan.

Day one: the river and the canyon

Drive the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive and finish at Santa Elena Canyon. The short canyon walk is one of the best payoffs in the park for the effort. Pack water and a hat.

Day two: the mountains

Head to the Chisos Basin for a morning hike while it is still cool. Choose a trail that fits your group and turn back early if it gets hot. Afternoon: rest on your deck.

Day three: Terlingua

Wander the Terlingua Ghost Town, then have dinner at the Starlight Theatre. Ask the crew for our current favorite stop on the way back.

Good to know

  • Cell service is limited. Download offline maps before you arrive.
  • Bring more water than you think you need.
  • Fuel up in Terlingua or Lajitas before long drives.
